Positive Results on a Very Hot Day.
Arriving at Ace on Thursday, June 4th for testing. With temperatures approaching 90 degrees Trevor would have 3 practices to dial his #77 Ward Performance, AAR Roofing, Digital Repair, MK Racing, Clarks’s Automotive Race Engines. There were a total of 31 cars ready to practice as well.
First Practice: This would be the longest practice which would be 1 hour. Going out on old tires which were from the previous race at (SNMP) Kenly, NC. He was able to maintain the 7th position on the practice timesheet. Reporting back to the team the car was turning good but needed more forward drive. Work was begun to improve during the second practice.
Second Practice- This would be only a 30-minute practice. Trevor went out and made a 5 lap run to see if changes helped improve forward drive. Reporting back the car was excellent and now only needed new tires all the while maintaining his 7th position on the timesheet. Crew chief Dean Ward suggested let us stay on old tires and cool them down hoping to improve.
Third Practice- After cooling the old tires the car was still doing great. So, new tires would be the next adjustment. Cooling engine down and mounting new tires he would not return to the track until 2 minutes left. Just enough time to make a 3 laps qualifying run. This would lastly bring him to 4th overall for the day.
Due to the forecast of rain race would be delayed until Saturday, June 6th. Waiting one more day was nothing compared to not racing for the last 3 months.
Race Day– This day would consist of two practices, qualifying and Race at Ace 125 @ 8:00 pm. During the two practices, the car was very good. Thus, the team chose to get ready for qualifying. Rolling off for qualifying 23rd out of 28 cars his result would be a 5th starting spot.
When the green flag was flown he would lose 2 spots to 7th place, a good spot to ride and save tires. Just beyond halfway and a restart he would drive into turn one and would spin due to the rear brakes locking up. Damage to the car was minimal but would cause the driver problems due to excessive heat. Pitting it was discovered the exhaust was closed somewhat and putting carbon monoxide and extreme heat inside. The driver returned to the race at the tail end of the field due to pitting remains on the lead lap. Trevor would communicate that he was extremely hot in the car and very uncomfortable. Lucky another caution would come out and the race was stopped on the front stretch. Officials allowed one crew member to take water to driver and a cool rag. Temporary relief to rejuvenate the driver for the final 50 laps of the race. Returning to green would be short another caution would come out on lap 80 of 125. Choosing to pit again it was more to help the comfort of the driver. Trevor refused to quit even being close to heat exhaustion. The race had one more lengthy caution with 5 laps to go. Again he pitted for water, when he returned he would finish 13th overall. So, with the attitude of a lion, he would tuff it out saying it was the hottest he has ever been in a race car.
Ward Performance #77, AAR Roofing, Digital Repair, MK Racing, Clark Automotive Racing Engines is 16th in Solid Rock Carries Cars Touring Series points. Only 28 points out of first place.
